India is a land of stark imbalances. One such is in the areas of education and employment.
On the one hand, millions of families in India languish in perpetual poverty, mainly caused by the lack of education and therefore, meaningful employment. They cannot put their children through school and college because the costs involved are out of their reach. Also, in many such family, the priorities are different. The children from these families take up odd jobs and try their best to support their families. Most children however fall into the morass of unemployment. Many even take to begging or crime.
On the other hand, the Indian economy is galloping ahead and is seen as one of the economic ‘stars’ of the future. Many industries are creating jobs and looking for competent manpower to handle those jobs. However, they are not able to find suitable people. The skill gap in the market place is a harsh reality for the organized sector of industry.
Isn’t the imbalance striking indeed?
Unnati was conceived to address this very imbalance in society - with the objective of empowering the youth from the poorest sections of our society to 'learn, earn and stand tall'. At the same time, it addresses the organised industry's requirement of trained manpower.
Unnati was started in a 3 room premises in Oct 2003. From 2008, Unnati has been operating from ‘Unnati Centre’, a 22,000 sft state-of-the-art facility. As of May 2010, more than 1100 youngsters have been trained and employed in reputed organisations.
