Welcome Note

The temple of Emerald Buddha is the most famous and popular shrine in Bangkok. Housing a two feet dark green statue of Buddha , the temple Wat Phra Kaeo is one of the most sacred temples of Thailand.

According to a story, the Emerald Buddha was once kept covered in a plaster in a monument in Chiang Rai, in an attempt to protect it from the enemies. The true brilliance of the green god was shown first when a bolt of lightning struck a pagoda, revealing a small and seemingly insignificant stucco Buddha image. After many years, the plaster began to crumble away, revealing the beautiful green jade image beneath. Several miracles have been associated with the Emerald Buddha, bringing the image of a reputation for good fortune. Today thousands of Buddhists pay their respects in front of the fabled image. This is just an example of how the true potential will remain hidden for ages if there is no attempt made to unearth it.. More than a small chisel that would have uncovered the brilliance, it is a pair of eyes that were needed to recognize the hidden treasure first. Buddha

Unnati with a keen eye for spotting and nurturing the talent and potential in the young men and women, has embarked on this relentless journey of ‘carving the young emerald Buddhas’ of the nation. All it takes is to peel the layers of restlessness, fear, lack of confidence that the youth has been plastered in to showcase the real gems that lie within these layers.

Team Unnati has been successful in this mission with the great support extended by its patrons, well wishers and friends. As we embark on training more number of youth every year, the demand on us to generate more funds is continuously mounting. We seek your help to introduce at least one more friend of yours’ to Unnati during this year to ensure that the program is not affected for want of funds. This is our sincere appeal to you.

Team Unanti wishes all its friends and patrons wonderful times ahead and request you all to continue to be part of this exciting journey… “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” – Thomas Alva Edison

Editorial:

“The Harder I Work, the Luckier I Get”

This quote about the relationship between work and luck comes from a famous film producer Samuel Goldwyn.

It may sound a little strange but turns out to be true as you spare an additional thought.

There are few true overnight successes for sure, but behind what looks like a sudden success is often years of work, trial and error, and failures. But the harder you work, the more good ideas you will get and help create more opportunities for yourself.

Among Goldwyn’s other great quotes is another point about luck:

“I think luck is the sense to recognize an opportunity and the ability to take advantage of it. The man who can smile at his breaks and grab his chances gets on.”

A very old and well known story goes like this…

A rich businessman who had a lazy and fun loving son wanted him to be hard-working and realize the value of labor. One day he summoned his son and told him to earn something on his own, failing which he would have to forgo his meals that night.

The boy who was callous and not used to any kind of work got intimidated and went crying to his mother. He managed to get a rupee from her and presented it to his father as his hard earned money. The father then asked him to throw it into a well. The son did as he was told.

The father with his wisdom and experience guessed the source of the rupee and sent his wife to her parents’ place. He asked his son to go and earn something with the same threat of being denied the night meals if he failed. This time the boy went crying to his sister and got another rupee from her. The father again asked him to throw it in a well. The son did it quite readily. Father knew what happened and sent his daughter away to her in-laws’ house. He again asked his son to go out and earn with the same threat that he shall not have anything for dinner that night.

This time with no one to help him out, the son was forced to go to the market in search of work. One of the shopkeepers there told him that he would pay him two rupees if he carried his trunk to his house. The rich man’s son could not refuse and was drenched in sweat by the time he finished the job. His feet were trembling and his neck and back were aching. There were rashes on his back. As he returned home and produced the two rupee note before his father and was asked to throw it into the well, the horrified son almost cried out. He could not imagine throwing his hard-earned money like this.

He said amid sobbing: “Father! My entire body is aching. My back has rashes and you are asking me to throw the money into the well.”

At this the businessman smiled and told him that one feels the pain only when the fruits of hard labor are wasted. On earlier two occasions he had no pain in throwing the coins into the well as they were simply borrowed. This act of his father made the son realize the value of hard work. He vowed never to be lazy again in life.

The story is very appealing without any doubt, but it is rather easier said than done in reality. It takes a lot of hard work to bring the much desired transformation in the young and imbecile youth to see the reality, carve a path of reality and take on the journey of life with confidence.

Team Unnati, with a firm belief in ‘working hard is the only way to achieve one’s dreams’ has achieved this difficult feat over the past few years with great success and satisfaction. It is a matter of immense pride and joy to see the smiling young faces leaving Unnati with confidence and satisfaction.

The vision was clear, the path was not .. there were hurdles, setbacks, hiccups, but our feet were firm on the ground and we had several supporting hands which made us march forward.. because we believe in the age old wise saying

“If a hungry person asks you for food, don’t give them fish, give them a fishing rod for fish will definitely mitigate hunger but fishing rod will give him a livelihood ”

” A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work. ” – Colin Powell
