Mr. Ramesh Swami
Dear Friends!
Life is always about Hope and Love. The pandemic has taught us many things in life and among them what have come out very strong are the emotions of hope and love. The year 2022 is on and we all step into this New Year with a lot of hope and enthusiasm. We are extremely grateful to the Almighty for helping us through the most difficult times ever faced by mankind.
Unnati bounced back brilliantly and in spite of the very tough times which we faced during 2020-2021 and the first quarter of April to June 2020- 21, we are on the way to achieving our target for 2021-2022, in a period of 8 months. Unnati has always been a progressive organization and has looked at solutions for the future. Even when the pandemic was on we knew that we will get over it and a situation where a lot of youth would be rendered jobless will have to be addressed on a war footing. We geared ourselves for the same, planned it in advance and today are executing one of the shortest ‘term programs’ in the world, 35 calendar days, with a guaranteed job at the end of the training, irrespective of their qualification.
We effectively utilised a lot of the time during the pandemic months to strengthen our curriculum, IT infrastructure, LMS (Learning Management Systems), Train the Trainer Program, reviving connect with our alumni and above all optimising our cost of operations.
All our 30 centres have been functional from July/August. Our special appreciation to the entire staff of Unnati, right from the changemakers (Trainers), Community Change Agents (Field Executives). Our Admn Staff, including accounts and security, HR, Placement Team and Volunteers, who have braced the pandemic and yet delivered. Hats off to their resolve and dedication in coming out daily to their respective centres to help the underprivileged youth get trained and placed. When majority of the country worked from home, we had our team delivering on the ground. For me, they compare to the covid warriors who were engaged in ensuring all the people received essential services, across the country.
There is joy, pleasure, and happiness in walking that extra mile. Come 2022, I urge everyone to definitely walk that extra mile. I can assure you that the reward compares to none. I wish you all a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year. I share below a wonderful paragraph on Madame Katherine Hepburn which will leave your hearts churning and ready to take on the New Year with all the required energy.
This year sharing with you a true story from the childhood of the great Hollywood actress Katherine Hepburn. It is titled ‘JOY OF GIVING’.
JOY OF GIVING – the real-life story from the childhood of the great Hollywood actress Katherine Hepburn.
One among the great Hollywood actresses, Katherine Hepburn was possibly the only person who won the Oscar four times, apart from being nominated a dozen times but was never present at the grand ceremony to receive it.
She believed that the affection and love of the people who enjoyed her acting and cinema were her greatest awards.
Katherine Hepburn was from a middle-class family with a modest upbringing. But her parents constantly instilled strong values in her growing up days.
One such incident was narrated by her later, in her own words:
“Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus.
Finally, there was only one other family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12.
The way they were dressed, you could tell they didn’t have a lot of money, but their clothes were neat and clean.
The children were well behaved. All of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands.
They were excitedly jabbering about the clowns, animals, and all the acts they would be seeing that night. From their excitement, one could sense they had never been to the circus before.
The father and mother were at the head of the pack standing proud as could be.
The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You’re my knight in shining armour.”
He was smiling and enjoying seeing his family happy.
The ticket lady asked the man how many tickets he wanted.
He proudly responded, “I’d like to buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets, so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady stated the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, the man’s lip began to quiver.
Then he leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?”
The ticket lady again stated the price.
The man didn’t have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight kids that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?
Seeing what was going on, my dad reached into his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill, and then dropped it on the ground. (We were not wealthy in any sense of the word!)
My father bent down, picked up the $20 bill, tapped the man on the shoulder, and said, “Excuse me, sir, and this fell out of your pocket.”
The man understood what was going on. He wasn’t begging for a handout but certainly appreciated the help in a desperate, heartbreaking, and embarrassing situation.
He looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand in both of his, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lip quivering and a tear streaming down his cheek, he replied; “Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”
My father and I went back to our car and drove home.
The $20 that my dad gave away is what we were going to buy our own tickets with.
Although we didn’t get to see the circus that night, we both felt a joy inside us that was far greater than seeing the circus could ever provide.
That day I learned the value of Giving. If you want to be large… larger than life, learn to Give. Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get – it is only concerned with what you are willing to give, which is everything.
Katherine Hepburn
